Our Shakespeare Gift Prints feature on Channel 4 series George Clarke's Old House New Home!

During an episode of George Clarke's Old House New Home, (Series 2, Episode 2) three of our Shakespeare Gift Prints graced the walls of a newly renovated 1800 Victorian terrace located just behind Shakespeare’s birthplace, in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

The show refurbishes historical properties and turns them into modern and liveable spaces inspired by the historical charms of the original property.

The Renovation Challenge: Industrial Chic Vibe

Inspired by the terrace’s humble Victorian origins a modern industrial style renovation was chosen. The industrial look dates back to the 60s in New York when old abandoned warehouses were converted by artists into sleek studio spaces and open plan loft style homes.

The look is typified by elements such as exposed brickwork and metal, reclaimed wood, beams and steelwork, open plan floors, clean bold lines etc. These spaces were promoted by magazines and interior designers, which then encouraged a flurry of warehouse conversions in the area.

The Adult’s Bedroom: Shakespeare Gift Prints

In the adult’s bedroom the Shakespeare gift quotes took centre stage, placed on a wooden ledge in black frames. Our modern drop shadow prints were a perfect fit with the industrial aesthetic because they mirror some of the bold lines and aesthetic of industrial chic. Our prints reflect the style with their contemporary upper-case typography, vibrant one tone colour backgrounds and prominent black drop shadow.

The Shakespeare quotes also allowed George Clarke’s production team to add a touch of Shakespeare to the Stratford-upon-avon based terrace house. The quotes featured were “Doubt thou the stars are fire, doubt that the sun don’t move. Doubt truth to be a liar, but never doubt I love” from Shakespeare's Hamlet and “Be not afraid of greatness some are born great, some achieve greatness and others have greatness thrust upon them.” From Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, and can be found on our Shakespeare Gifts page.

The Adult’s Bedroom: Recreate The Look

The adult bedroom created an industrial design feel by adding a side industrial light hanging down over the bed, a bed made out of an exposed wooden bed frame with a 60s vibe, a round black metal bedside table with a plant in a copper vase, wooden banisters and warm grey walls. One or two softer elements were introduced to balance out the look such as textured black and white bed throws and pillows.

The Kid’s Bedroom: 'Good Night' Shakespeare Gift Print

A Strength of Character print is also featured in the kid’s bedroom. The beauty of industrial chic is that it is widely thought to compliment any design style as it can easily act as a counterpoint to other styles. This is exemplified in the kid’s bedroom, although the room contains many pops of colour with only a few elements of industrial chic such as the copper light, our prints do not feel out of place.

The Shakespeare quote featured was “Good night good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say good night till it be morrow” from Romeo and Juliet.
